Welcome to the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission

West Virginia’s four-year public higher education system includes 12 campuses that offer vast opportunities for a high-quality education at an affordable cost. Together with these institutions and the state's Community and Technical College System, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is working to arm 60 percent of the Mountain State's workforce with a formal credential beyond high school by 2030 -- nearly doubling the percentage of working-age West Virginians with a postsecondary education over the next decade.

About the Higher Education Policy Commission

The Commission develops and oversees a public policy agenda for West Virginia’s four-year colleges and universities. Comprised of a 10-member board, the Commission works with institutions on accomplishing their missions and carrying out state procedures. A source of support for institutions and students, the Commission’s work includes academic affairs, administrative services, finance and facilities, financial aid, health sciences, human resources, legal services, policy and planning, science and research, and student affairs.

College Planning Resources for Students & Families

The Higher Education Policy Commission, together with the Community and Technical College System of West Virginia, has launched "College for West Virginia" as a new and expanded resource for West Virginians planning their postsecondary education.

Together, CFWV.com and its companion site, CollegeforWV.com, define CFWV as “College for West Virginia,” home to the state’s free resources for planning, applying, and paying for college.

On CFWV.com, students can still access an array of resources designed to help them plan for college and careers in West Virginia. With high school planning timelines, ways to explore the training and degrees available in the state, free ACT and SAT test prep, avenues for applying to colleges, and career-matching tools, this site remains as the state’s postsecondary planning centerpiece. Rounding out these offerings, CollegeforWV.com is the new home for state-level financial aid programs that total more than $100 million each year – including the Promise Scholarship, Higher Education Grant Program, and much more.

Mission and Vision Statement

Through engagement, advocacy, collaboration, and coordination of educational policy and research, we support West Virginia’s higher education system in meeting the current and future needs of West Virginia, its citizens, and its economy.

Listen to our new podcast "Appalachian Care Chronicles" now!

Brought to you by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and hosted by Aryana Misaghi, a 2023 graduate of Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, the podcast follows a variety of problem-solvers, change makers, and daily helpers—behind the scenes and on the front lines—to shine a light on what they do day-to-day and how they got there. It explores critical moments, both extraordinary and overlooked, within career trajectories that might (sometimes) appear traditional but are often full of twists and surprises.

Initiatives that support this shared goal include Open Learning West Virginia - a program that provides funding for faculty to adopt Open Educational Resources, which are low- to no-cost course materials. Through the program, students have already experienced an aggregate savings of over $620,000 in just three semesters.
